We were having lunch at Cheesecake yesterday (you know I love to go there) when she got a text. She had applied to CubaOne (a nonprofit that sends Cuban Americans to Cuba on a free week-long trip) a while ago and wasn’t accepted.
But someone dropped out last minute and she got selected to go. She’ll be in Pinar del Rio (where her family’s from) for half the time and Havana for the other half.
I’m gonna miss her like a crazy person. But it couldn’t be a better time for her to take this trip. It’s free, she’s off of work, and she’s been dying to go. I’m so proud of her for taking the chance when it fell in her lap. She basically had twelve hours’ notice. I drove her everywhere, to get her nails done, to get her hair done, to the orientation dinner where she got to know everybody, to the airport today at 4 AM.
I’m so happy for her. Travel makes you better. It puts you somewhere new, foreign, unrecognizable, and you have to find your way.
She comes back on Monday, which means we won’t be together to ring in the New Year. But I told her I’d save my New Year’s kiss for her and she said she would too.
I know, we’re cute.
