This is my senior year, my last year at UM. For everyone else that’s a senior too, now is the time to figure out what you want and go for it. Some tips.
1. This year, focus on the life you want and put in the work.
What makes you happy? Writing, music, business, volunteering, cooking, travel, activism? Get some idea of what it is so you can use this year to the fullest. I’ll be writing my memoir. I want a final draft by the time I graduate in May. I’m also gonna build my social media presence by being myself and sharing what I learn along the way. Start this thought process now so you have something to build on once you graduate.
2. Be okay with not knowing.
Don’t jump into a postgraduate degree just to make your parents happy. Be okay with being lost. As long as you’re trying stuff out, working hard, and enjoying the ride, you’re doing it right. Find examples of people doing what you want to do, and follow their example. Don’t listen to people that are scared of risk. Look to the people that inspire you, and remind yourself of their hustle and dedication when you feel like quitting. Just keep going and know that’s it okay to look like you’re flailing sometimes.
3. Take time for self-care.
Work hard, direct yourself, but take care of yourself too. Whether that’s through working out, hanging out with your best friends, spending time with family, or whatever it is, be gentle with yourself. Find a space where you can relax and laugh (or cry) sometimes.
I hope these tips could help you find some perspective. You have time for the things that make you happy. As long as you’re alive, you have time to be happy.
